Richard Wagner Siegfried Idyll, Ouverture and Bacchanale (Tannhäuser), Ouverture (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Siegfrieds Rheinfahrt, Siegfrieds Tod und Trauermarsch (Götterdämmerung), Starke Scheite schichet mir dort (Götterdämmerung, 3. Akt)
Opening with the serene, bucolic joy of the Siegfried Idyll (Wagner's birthday present to his wife, Cosima), the programme devised by Iván Fischer and his magnificent orchestra goes on to present two celebrated Wagnerian overtures, of contrasting moods. The journey takes us to the final convulsions of the drama of The Ring: the death of the hero Siegfried and the sublime final scene with the immolation of Brünnhilde, sung here by Petra Lang, and the end of Valhalla, the hall of the gods.
